The Boy
Back in 2011, I was in the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne and was intrigued by the “Water Wall” installation at the entrance.
I ended up spending an hour shooting all manner of people walking outside the museum. I finally got around to processing, printing and framing a series of these shots this year – more than a decade after I took the shots.
This is the second in that series, and one that I hadn’t looked at or processed since 2011. It’s worth dredging through the archives from time to time!

Such a beautiful little bird battling the freezing temperatures of
-27Β°C (16.6Β°F).
In Winter they form flocks and use their memory of where they have stored seeds and insects to sustain them during the coldest months.
Sometimes they freeze during the night and fall onto the snow from their perches in the forest.
Beauty in the back garden!!!

Eurasian Male Bullfinch resting in the freezing forest.
Striking rosy-red breast against the freezing conditions. They are known to dig deep into the snow in harsh winters, -27Β°C (16.6Β°F) while the poor Photographer froze.

Purchased for Β£100 on credit from Crowley’s Music Store in Gallagher’s home city of Cork in 1963, he played it from his teenage days with showbands to his international solo career. Gallagher was a musical innovator in the studio and a dynamic performer on stage.
Heavily worn and featuring personal modifications, this guitar was intrinsic to Gallagher’s unique sound and contribution to popular music.

Developed in 1970 by the British Ministry of Defence for riot control in Northern Ireland, rubber and plastic bullets killed 17 people, including eight children, during the Troubles. Approximately 120,000 were discharged between 1970-2005

Golden Eagles
I observed this pair mating high up in the trees in the forest which is an early part of their breeding behaviour and then they just came down to land. An amazing experience. Frost still clung to their eyes and beak in this cold harsh landscape.
Note the feathers on their legs which extend all the way down the leg which is a distinguishing feature of the Golden Eagle as the Bald Eagle has bare yellow lower legs.

Springtime reflection
I pass this tree nearly every day on my walk with my dog and mostly I walk by without a second glance, and the puddle is nearly always there. But last week the reflection caught my eye and I managed get this shot.

RPG7 Rocket Launcher

Decommissioned by the IRA as part of the Good Friday Agreement.
After years of negotiations, the Good Friday Agreement (or Belfast Agreement) between Northern Ireland’s political parties and the British and Irish governments was signed in 1998. It required nationalist and unionist politicians to use their influence to secure the decommissioning of paramilitary arms such as this RPG-7 rocket launcher used in Northern Ireland by the IRA during the Troubles. The pace of decommissioning was slow and was not completed by all paramilitary groups until 2010.
A Golden Eagle flies silently from the forest, talons splayed. The morning air is still freezing and tiny crystals of frost still cling to the curve of its hooked bill, sparkling in the first light of sunrise.

The Argan Girl
Girl at the argan oil co-operative at Ighrem N’Ougdal in the High Atlas, Morocco.
“Berber women traditionally prepared Argan Oil through a very labour-intensive process with low production yields. This made the commercial sale of Argan Oil outside of Morocco impossible. Today however, Argan Oil co-operatives have made large scale production possible.
Families grow Argan trees on small and large plots of land that have been owned by families for generations. When the Argan fruits ripen in June / July the fruits are picked and left to dry before being stored in large sacks.
Women removed the nut kernels from the nuts and ground them by hand using a grindstone. Next, water was added to produce an oil-rich dough which is squeezed to extract the Argan Oil.
This is a very labour intensive process. It would take about 1 week and about 20kg of Argan nut kernels to produce just 5 litres of oil.”

Eurasian Jay in snow. In Autumn they collect large caches of acorns and seeds to feast on during the Winter months. Cached seeds are often pilfered by other hoarders and often eaten or re-cached or stolen.

Bosta Time and Tide
A different type of image from the fabulous Isle of Harris & Lewis: The Bosta Time and Tide Bell.
Installed on June 19, 2010, the bell works through the movement of the tides. At high water, the sea moves the clapper to strike the bell and, as the waves hit, an ever-changing musical pattern is created. As well as being unique works of art, Vergette also intended the bells to remind people about the threat of global warming as they will sound more frequently as sea levels rise.
